As of July 4th 2018, the Internet as we know it might be dead for good.

The European Parliament is passing a new Copyright Directive.
Article 13 #CensorshipMachine will impose widespread censorship of all the content we share online. Art, fanfiction, parodies, remixes, mashups, memes, etc.. Anything that you do not hold the rights over will be taken down.

Article 13 would force all online platforms to police and prevent the uploading of copyrighted content, or make people seek the correct licenses to post that content. Internet platforms hosting large amounts of user-uploaded content must monitor user behaviour and filter their contributions to identify and prevent copyright infringement.

Such filters will be mandatory for platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit and Instagram, but also much smaller websites.

This doesn’t just affect Europe. The content creators you love are going to be in hot water for sharing their art and writing with you online. Any and all content that doesn’t belong to us will be filtered. Even memes are at risk, as the person who took the original photo may want to file complaints against any platform that allows it to be used without permission. But it goes even further than that.

Last Tuesday (19th June 2018) a group of more than 70 people who have played important roles in building the internet and developing it (Tim Berners-Lee, Vincent Cerf, Jimmy Wales, Mitchell Baker…) into what it is today addressed an open letter to the members of the European Parliament:

“As creators ourselves, we share the concern that there should be a fair distribution of revenues from the online use of copyright works, that benefits creators, publishers, and platforms alike.

But Article 13 is not the right way to achieve this. By requiring Internet platforms to perform automatic filtering all of the content that their users upload, Article 13 takes an unprecedented step towards the transformation of the Internet from an open platform for sharing and innovation, into a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users. […] The damage that this may do to the free and open Internet as we know it is hard to predict, but in our opinions could be substantial.”

Only they’re all being turned away and told DHS would prefer to work with volunteers who are ‘trained specifically for dealing with these situations’. One doctor with sixteen years of experience as a trauma doctor was told she was ‘overqualified.’

No. They’re turning away qualified medical practitioners looking to volunteer for the sake of the children, because said medical practitioners are mandated by law to report any child abuse they witness. The only doctors and nurses they want in those places are ones they can count on not saying anything about what goes on in there.

The fact that these doctors and nurses are trying to volunteer because they WANT to help these kids is literally what’s disqualifying them in the eyes of the evil pieces of shit who are running these places.

Hey I wanna talk about this.

I work at a drug addiction counseling center. A ton of my clients have, at one time or another, sold their food stamps. This is basically exactly what the GOP is afraid of, right? Drug addicts selling their food stamps.

I have learned, now, to ask them WHY they sold their food stamps. Here is an incomplete list of the answers:

- I need tampons, and you can’t buy them with foodstamps

- See above RE: toilet paper

- I was living in a hotel with no kitchen then. I had to buy pre-prepared food

- The homeless shelter won’t let me keep food in my locker or room, so I have to buy pre-prepared food (Yes, really)

- I had to make rent

- My sister had to make rent

- My son had to make rent

- I needed co-pays to get my medication or I’ll die

- I needed co-pays to get my medication or I’ll loose control of my mental health

But the absolute most common form of food stamp fraud I see? Giving away food stamps to other family members who get no food stamps or insufficient food stamps to feed their families. I see that every month. People glassy eyed and hungry because they gave away their food to their adult kids, their grand kids, cousins, siblings etc.

So, is food stamp fraud rampant? In some places, yes. And I’m not about to chastise people for it.

This needs to be said over and over.

- buy an apartment complex in 30 big cities around the US to create special communities for homeless queer teens where they can get a hs and college diploma and learn job skills, get access to health and psychological care, and have access to non-queerphobic religious services if wanted (90 mil to start?)

- buy my own house (at most 2 mil because I have to accommodate 3 family groups and I would want to make the house solar and wind powered; also the cost of my library and wait staff)

- pay the medical bills of every victim of a mass shooting or police brutality (including psychiatric care for the PTSD)

- give a 500k dollar grant to 4k minority-owned businesses (2 billion)

- pay my dad’s ex-wife’s care bills so my half-siblings don’t need to worry about it (she’s old; 1 mil would set her up for life with a cushion for emergencies)

- I’d have some kids

- I’d start a daycare/education center chain for sex workers with children that also provided medical care for kids and college opportunities for the parents that accommodated their work schedules

- I’d pay for young black kids to meet their book and movie heroes like Letitia Wright or Tomi Adeyemi

- I’d find impoverished US communities in need of “standard” meds like asthma inhalers and insulin and provide for them
